SB 1196 amended. No longer calls for the closure of Lanterman and Fairview Developmental Centers.
Mar 24, 2010 --- SB 1196, authored by Senator Gloria Negrete McLeod, was introduced on February 19 and called for the closure of Lanterman and/or Fairview Developmental Centers by December 31, 2010.
Senator McLeod was contacted by many families, friends, and staff of Lanterman and Fairview, along with others including DDS.
This bill, designated as a "spot bill" for future use, has been amended.
The current language does not call the closure of any DC, but merely instructs DDS to "maximize opportunities for public involvement relative to the proposed closure of the Lanterman Developmental Center by requiring that any plans and other public documents be posted on the department's Internet Web site no more than 72 hours after publication. In addition, the department shall post on its Internet Web site notice of any public meetings or teleconferences relative to the proposed closure of the Lanterman Developmental Center, along with public access information, no less than 72 hours prior to those public meetings or teleconferences."
The bill has been re-referred to the Rules Committee. We will continue to watch to see if there are any other amendments to the bill, and if and when it will be heard.
PLEASE NOTE: This bill does NOT affect the DDS recommendation to close Lanterman DC. The closure plan will still be submitted to the legislature before April 1, 2010.
